# Email API with Python

A backend-safe pattern for transactional email from Flask, Django, FastAPI, or a worker.

Python services should send email from trusted server code, validate inputs, capture response IDs, and use task queues when delivery should not block a request.

## What this means in practice

- Environment-managed credentials
- Validated message payloads
- Async or queued work for retries
- Structured logging with message IDs

## Implementation checklist

1. Load the API key from a secret manager or environment variable.
2. Validate message fields before making the request.
3. Use a timeout and classify retryable failures.
4. Persist the resulting provider message ID.
5. Move non-urgent mail into a queue worker as volume grows.

## Questions teams ask

**Should I use SMTP or an HTTP email API from Python?**

Either can work, but an HTTP API often gives clearer authentication, JSON payloads, and structured delivery responses.

**How should retries work?**

Retry transport or rate-limit failures with backoff; do not automatically repeat failures that could create duplicate sends.
