Costs a per-email price leaves out
- Overage. Past the plan allowance, Resend charges $0.46 to $0.90 per 1,000 emails, Mailtrap $0.55 to $1.00, Mailgun $1.10 to $1.80 and Postmark $1.20 to $1.80. SendHQ charges $0.17 per 1,000 past Scale's 200,000.
- Domains. Mailgun Basic and the Mailgun free plan allow one sending domain; Resend Pro allows 10 and sells 100 more for $20 a month; Postmark Basic allows 5.
- Dedicated IPs. $30 a month at Resend (Scale only), $50 per IP at Postmark (from 300,000 emails a month), included in SendGrid Pro and Mailgun Scale.
- Log retention. One day on Mailgun Basic, five on Mailtrap Basic, 30 on Resend, 45 on Postmark. Short retention makes delivery problems harder to trace.
- Inbound email. Postmark includes inbound processing from Pro; Mailgun limits inbound routes on lower plans.
Transactional versus marketing pricing
Transactional email (sign-ups, receipts, password resets) is billed by how many emails you send. Marketing email is billed by sends at SendHQ and MailerSend, by contacts at Resend, and by both at SendGrid Marketing Campaigns and Mailtrap.
A newsletter to 10,000 contacts four times a month is 40,000 emails. Priced by sends, that needs a 40,000-email plan; priced by contacts, it needs a 10,000-contact plan no matter how often you send:
- SendHQ (Starter Marketing): $19 a month
- Mailtrap Email Marketing (Essential): $29 a month
- MailerSend (Starter): $35 a month
- SendGrid Marketing Campaigns (Basic): $50 a month
- Resend (Pro Marketing): $80 a month
How to estimate your monthly volume
Count recipients, not messages: an email to three people is three emails on every plan here. For product email, multiply active users by the emails each receives in a month. 5,000 active users who get a welcome email, two receipts and three notifications is 30,000 emails. Add marketing sends separately, then leave headroom for growth before choosing a plan.
